This tutorial explains another way to extract an image from it’s background.
The image.

1. Start by Opening the layers pallet. Select the Channels tab.

2. In the Channels tab, select the green and drag it to the duplicate layer button. (shown here)

3. Make sure that Green is active. Select the layers tab. Make the image active again by clicking it.
4. Go—> Select—> Load Selection. While your new selection is still active, go back to the layers pallet. Click the Channels tab again and highlight RGB.
Once you are back to RGB mode, activate your image again by clicking on it.
5. Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V to paste your new selection. This will create a new layer with the RGB colors and selection we made earlier. It should look something like this.

You will notice a full selection cut out. This saves time when your under a deadline. Of course there are more precise ways to make a cutout.
6. Now go Layer—> New Layer—> and fill the new layer with a background color of your choice or simply paste your new cutout image over something else.
